This is a good, basic overview of the early career of Bob Dylan. It stops around 1990 and it gives (as usual) short shrift to the so-called “Gospel Years.” Nobody saw that coming….I didn’t learn anything new, though I was reminded of a couple of his earliest songs that I need to go back and listen to again. But if you are just getting interested in Dylan this film is an interesting introduction and jumping-off point, and if you already know the story it is a quick review.Lots of commentary. Nothing that I would call keen insight and nothing revolutionary in the commentary. But it’s not a boring film either. Despite what you may infer, I am glad I watched it.

I saw Dylan in the late 1980s at Madison Square Garden, NYC. I sat in the 400 blue seats, way up there. I couldn’t understand a word he was singing. Thank goodness, I knew half of the songs. This documentary is openly fair, telling how he made a comeback in the late 70s from his well known protest songs in the early 60s. Today, he’s a Nobel prize winner. The Dylan myth lives on with this documentary. Can’t wait for his next batch of songs, only if there’s a next time.
