Sure, it’s pricey but it isn’t the Compleat set so you needn’t admit to owning that. Somebody came up with the bright idea of collecting the curios from the three greatest “hits” sets and the even more numerous rarities on the 1985 Biograph box set. Most of it is from the glory days and most of it is top drawer Dylan, although production quality varies (to say the least). The “Dignity” version may not be Greatest Hits 3 (or at least it’s missing a couple instruments). The late 1971 single “George Jackson” was never anthologized but it’s also here. The Oscar tune has been added to most post-2000 Dylan collections and it’s also here. “Series of Dreams” was only in a couple of the bootleg series but somehow it also was included (Dylan must have forgotten his dispute with Daniel Lanois, whatever that was about). As usual with Japanese releases, the packaging is top notch, too.

This collection is for fans only. It’ a great import-only compilation, mainly of the unreleased tracks that were originally featured on Biograph. For good measure, Sony Japan threw in the unreleased tracks from Greatest Hits Vol. 2 and the single tracks George Jackson (available nowhere else, as far as I know), Series Of Dreams from Greatest Hits Vol. 3 & Things Have Changed (from Essential Bob Dylan and The Wonder Boys soundtrack). It also comes with a booklet of lyrics, in Japanese & English. The only downsides: The CD artwork seems to have been created for the LP format, as it breaks the tracks out into Side 1, Side 2, Side 3, etc. And it’s literally unreadable without a magnifying glass, and I mean beyond the usual CD-size font. Too bad because the package is really nice. The Groom Still Waiting at the Altar should have been included, as that was on Biograph-only, until it was subsequently added to the CD of Shot of Love. Also, the version of Dignity included in this set is not the ‘single’ version from Greatest Hits Vol 3, mixed by Brendan O’Brien; it’s either a different mix or a different take altogether. All that said, it’s still a terrific comp for the completists among us. Like me. Worth the dough.
